THE GHOST AND THE GRIMOIRE

AN EXCERPT

He gazed at her inquisitively.

She, obviously, was not what he expected. It gave her a moment to observe him as well, or at least what he once was. Intensely handsome and rugged appearing with long, dark hair pulled back in a ponytail. His dark eyes were almost hollow, reflecting the true meaning to the windows of his soul. His body was ripped, but in a wiry sort of way. The muscles of what was, pressed against the tightness of his uniform. In life, he certainly would have attracted many women.

He must have realized how close he was to her, as he quickly backed up, giving her more space. She used the distance to scramble to her feet, brushing herself off as she peered indignantly through him. She detested her body showed a weakness her spirit didn't have and now the initial shock of seeing a ghost had past, she was about to give him a piece of her mind and then some. Her face scowled, her eyes narrowed, she placed her hands on her hips and took a purposeful step forward.

“How dare you frighten people like that? In case you are unaware of this, let me be the one to break the news to you. You. Are. Dead.” She enunciated the last three words to make sure she was clear and there wouldn't be any misunderstanding. “And from the looks of your uniform, I would off-hand say you've been dead for about a hundred and fifty years or so, rounding up of course. So here is another tidbit of news, just in case you missed it the first time around, the Confederacy lost the war. The Union won and now we are all one big bankrupt country where everyone is unhappy but at least slavery is no longer an important issue of the day with regards to the black African American.”

Her tirade continued almost without her taking a breath and certainly leaving him no room to respond in any way, even if he could. She verbally tore into him while he stood trying to comprehend the man he was expecting was instead a little angelic spitfire of a woman with a spirit he had never encountered from the female species before.

“As for this being your house, I doubt it's possible. Last time I checked, transparent people didn't have property rights to deeds. However, my Uncle Ben left me this property of which the living courts allow. I do not think they make exceptions to previous owners who are no longer part of the living world which resides above ground in a breathing state.”

To make her point, she passed her hand through his opaque torso. As she pulled her waving hand back, she angrily added,

“As a result, you are the one trespassing. Go into the light I am always hearing about, or find some other place to rattle your chains because this is now my house and I'm here to stay!”

Finally, she stopped talking and glared at him as if to refute anything she stated. She doubted much of her tirade would matter, but it irked her to no end that he felt justified in pushing her out, especially, since he didn't know her or her circumstances such as she had nowhere else to go. Hell, she wasn't even sure she could hold onto her bequeathed gains, but this spirit didn't need to know any of her worries or concerns.

Eli listened to her. How could he not? She had spunk, more so than any damn Yankee he'd ever encountered and more than most women in general. When she finally halted her speech to take a breath, he burst out laughing. He couldn't help it and it unnerved him slightly. He had expected a man as the interloper of his domain and got a seraphic looking vixen instead.
