Carmen Muñoz
Supporting Character — The Women of the Willow Wood Trilogy
By day, Carmen Muñoz is a dedicated fifth-grade teacher at Mesa Luna Elementary in Albuquerque, known for her calm authority in the classroom and her unwavering advocacy for vulnerable students. After dark, however, she serves a far more clandestine calling: Guardian within the Secret Society of the Willow Wood Women, an ancient sisterhood sworn to protect their own—and the world beyond—from encroaching darkness.
In her mid-thirties, Carmen carries herself with quiet confidence and sophistication. With long auburn hair, deep brown eyes, and a commanding presence, she reflects the strength of the generations of women who came before her. Proud of her Hispanic heritage and raised among formidable matriarchs, Carmen embodies resilience, loyalty, and an unshakeable sense of duty. Though single and without children, she considers the Sisters of Willow Wood her family and defends them with fierce devotion.
Carmen is a natural leader—decisive, perceptive, and protective—which is precisely why she is chosen to serve as Guardian to Daniella Reyes, the trilogy’s central protagonist. As Daniella enters the society and awakens to her own role in its destiny, Carmen becomes both her shield and her confidante. She stands beside Daniella through supernatural threats and everyday trials alike, including the challenges of navigating the teaching profession in Albuquerque, where Carmen supports her friend against criticism from colleagues, institutional resistance, and forces far more sinister.
A seasoned guardian, Carmen possesses rare spiritual gifts. She can call upon ancient goddesses for guidance and protection, channeling their power through sacred sites scattered across New Mexico—hidden portals known only to the Society. Her knowledge of regional lore and mystical practice proves invaluable as she guides Daniella through rituals, confronts dark spells cast by rogue sisters, and seeks the aid of a legendary Curandera in Santa Fe. Carmen is also highly skilled in warding off skinwalkers and dismantling the influence of dark cults that threaten the Southwest.
Beyond her sacred duties, Carmen finds joy in the vibrant culture of Albuquerque. She enjoys meeting friends in Old Town for lunch, exploring boutique shops, and indulging in authentic New Mexican cuisine—flavors that reflect her heritage and keep her grounded amid the supernatural demands of her life.
Carmen’s role deepens as the trilogy progresses, culminating in a pivotal appearance in the final instalment, 'Last Rites'. There, she is called upon once more to stand beside Daniella in a perilous mission against “Eternity’s Gate,” a powerful and malevolent cult operating far from home. As the Sisters prepare to confront the darkness within a forbidden temple, Carmen’s loyalty and courage are tested like never before—proving that guardianship is not only a duty, but a bond of love and sacrifice that transcends fear.
Steadfast, intuitive, and fiercely loyal, Carmen Muñoz is more than a supporting character—she is a protector, a warrior, and the kind of friend who walks willingly into shadow so that others may stand in the light.
